For the past decade Triangulo has been and continues to be New York City's only dance studio exclusively dedicated to Argentine tango. And it is the favorite starting place of novice dancers! Our classes are kept small (8-10 couples), and focus on individual attention in a stress-free learning atmosphere where our students are not required to bring a partner, and switching partners during class is encouraged.
Carina Moeller teaches or oversees all of the classes. Classes are generally assisted so that students can see both the leader's and follower's roles. Our programs of instruction are designed to get you dancing in no time!
New classes start each month. Classes meet once a week for four weeks. See below for class-content details. Our classes are organized into Three Exciting Programs of instruction for new and seasoned dancers
The Crash Course for Beginners is the doorway into the delights of
tango dancing. If you have never danced Argentine tango before, this
program is designed for you! With our guided & structured instruction,
supported by a relaxed practice space, we will get you dancing in no
time! This program will prepare you to advance into the discovering
tango stage. Students wanting a faster start are encouraged to take both
the Tuesday and Thursday classes and to attend the weekly
milonguita.
Level 1: Beginner -- Tuesdays @ 6:30pm or Thursdays @ 7:30pm
The Discover Tango Program is the stage where the basic skills you have
acquired here at TriANGulO, or elsewhere, allow you to discover the
astonishing variety of steps and movements that make Argentine tango the
most intricate and sensual of partner dances. This is where the fun
begins! This program will develop your skills and confidence, allowing
you dance and have fun at the various tango venues in the city. It
provides a dedicated milonga class and a technique class. Watch out,
before you know it you might be out dancing 3 to 5 times a week!!
Level 2: Advanced Beginner -- Wednesdays @ 7:30pm
Level 2: Advanced Beginner Technique -- Thursdays @ 6:30pm
Level 3: Pre-Intermediate -- Wednesdays @ 8:30pm
The Tango Lab for Intermediate and Advanced Dancers is where sustaining passion
flourishes; here you expand into an exploration of the frontiers of
tango. You will add depth and subtlety to your dancing. This program is
designed to allow you to explore tango as a creative form, where
spontaneity and improvisation will become part of your own personal
style.
Level 4: Intermediate -- Tuesdays @ 7:30pm
Level 5: Itermediate/Advanced Tango -- Tuesday @ 8:30pmCrash Course for Beginners
New to Argentine tango? We'll get you dancing in no time!
You are not expected to know anything about tango or about partner
dancing, and you don't need to bring a partner. You will
learn: Basic walking, basic lead and follow, fundamental tools for
navigating around the dance floor and how to lead the "cross".
This class is also useful for students who have taken just a couple
classes and want to perfect their basics! Students wanting a faster
start are encouraged to take both the Tuesday and Thursday classes and
to attend the weekly
milonguita.
Discover Tango Program
This level is for students who have taken at least one month of classes.
You will learn: Walking, lead and follow, musicality, front and back
"ochos", "ocho cortado", and
"media vueltas". You are welcome to take this
class in combination with the
Advanced-Beginner Technique on Thursdays.
Most students spend about three months of at this level before moving
onto the next level.
This class focuses on the technical elements of the dance such as
posture, balance, partner communication, axis awareness, and
connectivity. These elements will help you be a more effective leader
or follower, and add some polish to the steps you are learning.
Students in either the
Advanced Beginner or
Pre-Intermediate class are
encouraged to take this class as well. It's also a great
class for leaders who want to learn to follow, or followers who want to
learn to lead.
This level is for students who have taken at least four months of
classes. Here, while improving your leader-follower communication, you
will learn: Variations of the basic patterns, countering front and back
"ochos", "molinetes", and basic "sacadas".
Most students spend about three months of at this
level before moving onto the next.
Tango Lab for Intermediate and Advanced Dancers
This level is for students who have taken at least seven months of
classes. You will learn: Switching the frame from close to open and vice
versa, navigating on a crowded dance floor,
"voleos", turns, "sacadas"
for leader and follower, "barridas", alterations,
wraps, changes of direction, musicality. (Students should take six
months of Intermediate
and do a level assessment with Carina before
switching to the next level.)
This level is for students who have taken at least a year of classes.
This class explores the technical aspects of the dance with special
emphasis on the basic elements: lead and follow weight changes, pivots,
turns, shared and individual axis, changes of direction and
counterbalance. You will learn to find your own personal dance style and
advance your improvisation abilities.
