With this tango, the tango was born and like a shout it left the sordid mud seeking the sky. - From "El Choclo", Lyrics by Discépolo and Catán
Emily and Henry started the Wednesday Practica for beginner and intermediate dancers almost a year ago, but this one will be extra special...for starters, THE Jorge Torres will be improvising a performance with Carina! You may recognize Jorge from the film Surrender Tango shown at Triangulo's recent movie night. Star of the hit broadway show Forever Tango, Jorge is renowned worldwide for his dancing and choreography. Come see what happens when two first-class tangueros dance together for the very first time. What can happen? What can't? Remember, not only is it their first performance and first ever dance, it's their first time meeting! Performance at 10:30pm.
It's also Henry's last Practica until 2009 (he's moving to Buenos Aires for five months - gasp)! If you've ever learned a step from Henry, had fun at the Practica or cracked a smile at one of his weekly emails, come wish him well! Even if you're feeling dancefloor-shy, you can come watch the performance, drink some wine, enjoy the music and atmosphere, say hello, say g'bye...all that good stuff. While you're at it, bring your non-tango friends and we'll let them in for free. In case you're still unconvinced, check out the rest of the lineup:
Next Beginners' Night Out is Wed 8/27 - stay tuned for details!

Rachel Greenberg will be in New York for a brief visit at the beginning of August. Her travels take her mainly to Europe, where she often teaches workshops with Pablo Veron. This is a rare opportunity to study with this amazing teacher. Rachel's preferred style is tango salon, which she blends with some modern movements while always retaining the milonguero aesthetic. Her Triangulo workshops are specially geared towards dancing socially at milongas and making your experience on the dance floor more enjoyable. For more information or to preregister for any of the workshops please email Francesca (francescabl25 at gmail.com). One workshop $40 (Triangulo students $35), both $70 (Triangulo students $60). Partner not required.
How to Dance the Silence 3-5pm
All to be more elegant and precise in the dance and reach a better
connection with your partner and a better reaction to leading. Tango
salon elements: sequences to use in the context of social dancing
emphasizing the quality of movements and elegance.
Interpretation of Rhythmic Music: D'Arienzo, Biagi, and Others. Not all tango music is created the same. Fun sequences to dance to rhythmic, confiteria-style music.
Note: Rachel will also be teaching a workshop on followers' technique at Ripley Grier on 8/12 - email Francesca (francescabl25 at gmail.com) for details.
Are you feeling dizzy? Faint of breath? It's not the summer heat, it's this month's featured topic! The giro is a turning step used to circle around your partner. As with all of the basic tango elements, it can be maddeningly difficult to perfect. Once mastered, however, there is no better way to show off the follower and preserve momentum within limited space. Whirl away! (Advanced Beginner thru Intermediate)
Sign up before 8/5 and get $5 off August classes ($75, Reg. $80)! Beginners' Night Out Only: bring your non-tango friends to our 7/30 Beginners Night Out for FREE. If they sign up for classes that night they get $20 off and you get $10 off (Reg. $80)! See above for details on Beginners' Night Out.
2007 US tango champ Eduardo teams up with Carina to teach an all-new series of advanced workshops on Thursday nights 8:30-9:30pm. $22/each or $80 for all 4 ($75 if you sign up before 8/5). By permission of instructor - to register please email ginny(at)tangonyc.com your name and the dates you wish to attend. Partner not required.
A Mile a Minute: Introduction to Milonga Traspie - Thursday 8/7
The soul of milonga, the traspie is a walking step in which the dancer
uses two beats of music to step-cross-step, beginning with either foot
and moving in any direction. Add agility and rhthym to your milonga with
an introduction to (and variations on) this classic move.
Down & Out: Planeos, Lunges and Other Low Movements - Thursday 8/15
Join us as we play around with concepts of the lead and the often
overlooked dimension of height in tango. We will focus on lunges and the
planeo, a move in which the leader steps forward onto a foot, usually
his left, and pivots with the other leg trailing as the follower dances
an additional step or two around him. Beautiful, suspended motion that
will expand your nuevo repertoire.
A Clean Sweep: Barridas, Sweeps for Lead and Follow - Thursday 8/22
The barrida or sweep is a flirty move in and of itself; learn how to
incorporate it into new sequences that open up two-way dialogue between
leaders and followers.
Crack of the Whip: Better Boleos - Forward, Back and Inline - Thursday
8/29
Boleos can be the tango equivalent of lightning: a surge of energy that
begins with the leader and shoots down the follower's body, crackling
into a brilliant flash of leg. The sparks may fly, but boleos require a
challenging mix of control and release: the follower must preserve her
core while releasing her free leg, and the leader must execute his
timing perfectly. Finetune your technique and play with front and inline
boleos.

Send us a postcard and we'll post it - we've already received postcards from Morocco and Monaco. Also, coming soon: keep your eye out because we'll be setting up a modest lending library for tango DVDs, CDs, and books. Donate your own tango resources as well. FREE!
Tangueros, tell your non-tango friends and spread the word! Once or twice a month, Triangulo offers a free, one-hour tango lesson for absolute beginners. This is a perfect chance for your friends to try out this wonderful dance without making a month long commitment.

This is the Tango (1999), 3-part radio series by Guadalupe Jolicoeur for the Roots and Wings program on CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corporation), is an amazing love letter to tango and its history, full of rare vintage tracks and spellbinding detail. The original site has disappeared but fortunately a fellow fan recently reposted the program to their own site.
